What to Expect During a Psychoeducational Evaluation

If your child has been recommended for a psychoeducational evaluation, you might be wondering what the process involves and how to prepare. As a Licensed Educational Psychologist who conducts evaluations throughout the South Bay — including Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, El Segundo, and Palos Verdes Peninsula — I want to walk you through what to expect.

Why Would My Child Need a Psychoeducational Evaluation?

Psychoeducational evaluations are recommended when there are concerns about a child's learning, behavior, or development. Common reasons include:

The Initial Consultation

Before testing begins, we have an initial consultation where I learn about your concerns, your child's developmental and medical history, and what questions you are hoping the evaluation will answer. This is also your opportunity to ask questions about the process, timeline, and what happens after testing is complete.

What Tests Will My Child Take?

A comprehensive evaluation typically includes several types of assessments:

Cognitive Assessment

This measures different types of thinking skills including verbal reasoning, visual-spatial abilities, working memory, and processing speed. Tests like the WISC-V give us a detailed picture of how your child thinks and learns.

Academic Achievement

Using the WIAT-4 or WJ-IV, I assess your child's current skills in reading, writing, and mathematics — both basic skills and higher-level reasoning.

Processing Skills

Tests of phonological processing, visual-motor integration, attention, and executive functioning help identify specific areas where your child might be struggling.

Social-Emotional and Behavioral Assessment

Rating scales completed by you, teachers, and (when age-appropriate) your child help identify anxiety, mood concerns, ADHD, autism traits, or other factors affecting school performance.

How Long Does Testing Take?

Testing typically takes place over two to three sessions, each lasting two to three hours. We schedule sessions in the morning when your child is fresh, with breaks built in. Most evaluations are completed within two to three weeks from start to finish.

Private Evaluation vs. School Evaluation

You have the right to request a free evaluation through your public school. Many parents choose a private psychoeducational evaluation for faster turnaround (school waitlists can be months long), more comprehensive testing, greater control over the process, an independent perspective not employed by the district, and detailed, parent-friendly reports.

What Happens After Testing?

After completing the assessment, I analyze all the data and write a comprehensive report. We then meet for a feedback session where I explain the results in plain language, answer your questions, and discuss specific recommendations for school, home, and any therapeutic interventions that might help.

The goal is never just a label. The goal is to give your family a roadmap — clear, practical, and actionable.

How to Prepare Your Child

Keep it low-key. Tell your child something like: "We're going to meet with someone who is going to help us understand how you learn best. There will be some games, puzzles, and activities — there are no grades and no way to fail." For older kids and teens, you can be more direct: "We want to figure out why some things have been harder than they should be, so we can get the right kind of support."

Make sure they get a good night's sleep, eat a real breakfast, and arrive on time. That's really all the preparation needed.
